Jingle Bells è una delle canzoni natalizie più conosciute al mondo. Fu composta nel 1850 da James Lord Pierpon che si ispirò alle corse con le slitte che, annualmente, si tenevano nella cittadina di questi: Medford, nel Massa- chusetts. Difatti la canzone non fu composta per le festività natalizie ma in origine il brano che s'intitolava One Horse Open Sleigh fu crea- to per celebrare il giorno del ringraziamento. Solo dopo sette anni il compositore di Boston riuscì ad ottenere i diritti d'autore del brano e due anni dopo nel 1859 in una ri-pubblicazione comparve per la prima volta il titolo con cui tutti oggi lo riconoscono: Jingle Bells. Scrivere di quante cover e rifacimenti è stata oggetto la celebre Jingle Bells è impre- sa impossibile, praticamente tre quarti di mondo, se non di più, l'ha can- ticchiata almeno una volta nella vita. Possiamo però citare delle cover particolari come quella jazz della fenomenale tromba di Louis Armstrong e della voce per eccellenza Frank Sinatra, la classica di Nat King Cole dal titolo: The Christmas song, quella beat dei Beatles, la twist di Cay & The Scaffolds, quella lirica dei tre celebri tenori Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti, la versione disco di Gladys Knight & The Pips, quella folk-country di una Barbra Streisand western, giocosa e fuori dai suoi schemi e la tropicale esecuzione degli ABBA. In Italia nel 1970 sarà il molleggiato, Adriano Celentano si cimenta in una sua interpretazione pop, italianizzata da Specchia. Nel 1937, infine, Bobby Helms interpreta per la prima volta il brano natalizio Jingle Bells rock, una composizione rockabilly di Joe Beal e Jim Boothe che cita nel ritornello proprio Jingle Bells e la stessa Jingle Bells rock viene interpretata da decine di arti- sti con versioni disparate d'ogni genere, proprio come la sua fonte ispiratrice del 1850.
